What Am I Doing?

What am I doing?

➜ Clearing ice from my laneway?
➜ Taking “a break” from work?
➜ Getting some exercise?

I would propose that I am doing all 3. I am using movement to fuel my brain.

➜ I get a sense of accomplishment from clearing my laneway.
➜ My body feels good from doing something physical.
➜ I feel better by making the laneway safer for my neighbours.
➜ It allows my mind to wander enough to find a path forward on my work.

The idea that we need to take a break from work has always been a poor choice of labels from my perspective. (For parents with young children, work often 🅸🆂 the break.) I have spent more than 20 years using a home office. Doing something physical has consistently been part of my day - it allows me to develop my physical health, support my emotional wellbeing while finding new ideas and approaches for my work.

WFH can give us some increased opportunities to be more productive while supporting our whole self. Organizations that understand and encourage this approach will thrive.
